IVF Kids May Come with High Blood Pressure Risk

Health Risks for Adolescents Conceived via IVF

By Kristen Fischer September 9, 2018

An interesting study recently came out that found kids conceived via the assisted reproductive technology (ART) known as in-vitro fertilization (IVF) could have a higher risk for having elevated blood pressure as adolescents. The study appeared in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The researchers examined 54 kids conceived via IVF  and compared them to 43 control subjects. Children in both groups had similar bloodwork, birth weights and gestational ages; their mothers' body-mass index, smoking status and cardiovascular risk profile were also similar. According to one of the researchers, Emrush Rexhaj, the pathway that causes high blood pressure in IVF kids is likely a genetic component that regulates the cardiovascular system.

This isn't the first time health impacts have been reported in children born through IVF. Researchers have found that it can also make children prone to developing insulin resistance.
