5 Tips for Unforgettable Family Photos

Holiday Photos Made Easy

By Kristen Fischer November 21, 2018

It’s holiday photo time! Whether you’re taking family pictures on your own or you’ve hired a professional photographer, there are a few things to do to ensure that the process is enjoyable—and the images are always cherished.

1. Pick the right proOn the hunt for a professional photographer to take your holiday photos? “Make sure that the photographer you choose reflects your personal style,” said Rachel Zebrowski, a photographer based in Manasquan, NJ.

If you like casual photos, formal photos or creative shoots with lots of props, look for those in the photographer’s gallery. “Ensure that you choose a photographer whose set up and theme is in line with what you envision for your personal expression of holiday wishes to friends and family,” she noted.

Remember, hiring a professional is a business transaction so ensure you know what you’re giving and getting. Make sure you know what is included in your package before you book anything, Zebrowski said. Have a contract in place—a professional photographer should have one—that clearly outlines the agreement.

“Discuss what should happen if the weather doesn't cooperate on the day of your shoot or if someone gets sick and you need to reschedule,” she said.

2. Plan your pics—to a degree. The photographer may be your cousin and the camera may be your iPhone, but you should still communicate what you want out of the shoot. Using a professional? Keep in mind that they want you to be happy with the pictures, so discuss what you want out of the shoot beforehand

“If there are certain pictures that you know you want captured, then make sure your photographer is made aware,” Zebrowski said.

“I like to know in advance about any specific shots that a family wants to include. I try to get those done first. That way if something doesn't go as planned, we can always circle back at the end of the session to try again,” she added.

3. Prepare, prepare. Worried about what to wear? Stay away from patterns that could mismatch or clash. “I recommend coordinated outfits, that complement one another, rather than match exactly,” she said.

Moms are often the ones rushing around before a photoshoot, making sure that their family is dressed and ready to go. Oftentimes they leave their own preparation until the last minute,” she said. Zebrowski recommends that moms get their hair and/or makeup done professionally. If that’s not in the budget, make sure you give yourself extra time to get yourself put together before you prepare the children.

Make sure you allow enough time for everyone to get ready so you don’t show up to a photoshoot rushed, as it can set the tone for a hectic experience.

“Give yourself extra time to get ready so that you're prepared if anything doesn't go as planned. If your family is feeling confident about their appearance, it will reflect in your photos,” Zebrowski noted.

4. Feed your photos. Got kids? Make sure the photoshoot isn’t during naptime, and make sure the children arrive with snacks. “Fed, rested children will be the most willing subjects,” she added.

5. No pro. Don’t have the budget or time to hire a professional? Try taking photos on your own. “Make it fun,” Zebrowski said. “Don't be afraid to show some personality.”
