((Let me start off by saying that I am not a History buff. In fact, I clearly remember falling asleep in my high school US History class. Knowing such, you might find it a bit odd that I am writing an article comparing today's podcasts to a piece of FDR's presidency. Rest assure it is very light in facts, but beautifully represents how friendly conversation can be comforting, educating and even a bit supporting during unsettled times.))
In 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed the nation via radio broadcasts in a series that came to be known as the Fireside Chats. These informal conversations used simple language and familiar analogies so that EVERY American would understand their message. At their root, these chats reassured the nation and boosted confidence during The Great Depression.
As we are currently experiencing a horrific pandemic, a lot can be said for something that "reassures the nation and boosts confidence." Being as though the news does not always "sooth" its viewers, I have come to appreciate the knowledge shared in noteworthy podcasts and the humor offered in others. I actually look forward to listening to some of my favorite shows; thinking of them as happy hour meet ups or Saturday morning workouts with a friend.
Since I have found such enjoyment in podcasts, I wondered if there might be some magic in introducing my son to the world of digital audio series. As someone who is not the biggest fan of screen time (but certainly welcomes Peppa Pig into our house from time to time) I liked the idea of a non visual entertainment tool. After researching some of the top rated podcasts for kids, I created a list below of some to try in your homes too! It is my hope that these podcasts, or Fireside Chats 2.0, might comfort you while supporting your need to keep your kiddos entertained on Day 7,897,609 of quarantine
