Not another pair of socks ;)

Fun (LOCAL) gift suggestions for your dad this Father's Day!

By Katelyn Downes June 11, 2020

When I was in elementary school, the PTA would run a fundraiser each June.  This fundraiser was not one to celebrate the end of the school year, but rather one that honored the student's dads.  The Father's Day Sock Sale was one that I took part in every year that I was at Manito School.  I can clearly remember bringing my money in an envelope, peaking into each bin and selecting what I thought was the best pair of socks for my dad!  Looking back, I'm sure my dad wasnt excited about another gift curtesy of the Manito PTA, but each year he would act as if I just gave him a million dollars upon slipping on his latest pair of socks!

While times have changed (and my dad has not been the recipient of a pair of socks in over 20 years), Father's Day is still a special day in my house!  I was lucky enough to visit my dad last weekend, but next Sunday I will celebrate a guy who means a lot to me and even more to my kids, my husband!

My husband is the kind of guy who would much rather sleep though a holiday than be celebrated. Me, on the other hand, likes to make a big deal out of national fruitcake toss day (yes, that is a real thing).  In order to find a happy medium, abide by the COVID-19 restrictions and pull everything together in 48 hours, I connected with our community to come up with 5 creative ways to celebrate Dad on Sunday!

1.  Toast him with one of his favorite cocktails "to go"!

Call up Reef and Barrel in Manasquan or The Spring Lake Tap House in Spring Lake Heights for a sensational sip!

2.  Pick up breakfast from his favorite spot!

Check out the egg-ceptional takeout menu at Bay Head's Dune Grass Cafe

3.  Buy a gift card from one of his favorite local stores to be used once restrictions have been lifted

Whether he's in the market for new clothes or a new book, Village Tweed in Spring Lake or Booktowne in Manasquan has got him covered!

4.  Sign him up for an outdoor fitness class

Tandem Cycle in Asbury Park, F45 Training in Wall and Ocean Athletics in Neptune all offer outdoor alternatives to keep your dad strong!

5.  Take him to Allaire State Park or one of our fabulous beaches to enjoy some quality time together
