In last week's newsletter, I wrote an article about the travel options that families still have this summer, despite the COVID-19 restrictions. While this article was both refreshing to research and write, I realized that I neglected one of the most basic "getaways." Camping is not only a fun family adventure, but it is also an affordable and relevant option for the summer of 2020! Here in Monmouth County, we have five amazing campsite options. Each of these are only a stones throw away and offer different options for safe outdoor family fun!
I personally reached out to each of these sites to gather some information. I learned that while each are open, they differ in the availabilities and amenities. If you are considering a camping excursion, please visit each of the campgrounds' sites to confirm the most up to date information. In the meantime, however, read on to see if you might have "s'more" fun camping this summer!
Pine Cone NJ - (http://www.pineconenj.com/) - Located in Freehold, NJ, Pine Cone is currently only operating as a RV camping site. This is because their restrooms are not open. At this time, their pool and playground are also not open.
Timberland Lake Campground - http://www.timberlandlakecampground.com/ - Located in Jackson, NJ, Timberland Lake is open for tent camping. Their pool is now open and their boats are available for renting. Unfortunately, their playground is not open.
Gateway National Recreation Area - https://www.nps.gov/gate/planyourvisit/camp-sandy-hook.htm - Located in Sandy Hook, NJ, this very popular site has limited availability. If you are interested, please look to make your reservation here: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234714.
Cheesequake State Park - https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.html - Located in Matawan, NJ, Cheesequake State Park is open for camping. At this time, only half of the sites are open due to social distancing restrictions. To make your reservation, please visit: camping.nj.gov (and select Cheesequake)
Allaire State Park - https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/allaire.html - Located in our very own backyard, Allaire State Park opened for camping on June 22nd. There is a 2 night minimum stay to reserve and like Cheesequake, half of their sites are closed due to social distancing orders. I was also assured that the bathrooms at Allaire State Park are cleaned 3x/day. To make your reservation, please visit: camping.nj.gov (and select Allaire)
