Dollar Store Decor

How to create this spooky (savvy) halloween decoration!

By Kate Downes October 16, 2020

I'm not sure if it is because we have all had a bit of extra time at home, but the Halloween decorations that have gone up in my neighborhood are AWESOME!  From rustic pumpkins to spooky scenes, the holiday is far from cancelled on my block!  While I have shared different ways to celebrate Halloween in Quarantine, decorating is an activity that doesnt need much COVID-19 correction.  What decorating can sometimes need, however, is a savvy save so that your wallet can be treated, not tricked by November 1st.

In order to save a few extra dollars on my inside decorations, I looked no further than to the Dollar Tree in Wall.  Boy was I surprised by the amount of things that they had for Halloween!  I honestly couldnt believe that they even had costume pieces to purchase!  Deciding that I had no use for a cute pair of butterfly wings or a tiny witch hat, I made my way to a bucket full of styrofoam pumpkins.  While they were a bit "beat up,"  I still placed 6 of them into my basket as a decorating idea had already started brewing in my head.  In order to complete the project, I grabbed a bag of plastic spider rings and a black sharpie marker.

With my purchases in hand (and Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' in my head), I made my way home to start (witch) crafting!  Here is what I did to make spooky pumpkins with my son for our bay window display:

1.  With a sharpie, draw a line down from the pumpkin's stem on every other indentation.

2.  Draw lines perpendicular to the lines drawn in step 1 to create circles around the pumpkin.  (*I made 3 circles; 1 close to the stem and 2 more further down the pumpkin)

3.  Cut the spider rings so that you have "pokey" ends to stick into the pumpkin.

4.  Stick your spiders around the pumpkin as if they are "weaving" their web!
